Mystery: A secret ingredient to a great photo

Have you ever been in a rut, and only recognized it when you see someone else’s work? I’ve just had that experience. I am, admittedly someone who is still learning SL photography. I’m pretty good on the angles, the lighting, the framing. That’s, fine, but it’s merely the basics. I’ve had this unrecognized itch that my images were lacking punch, emotion, but I wasn’t quite sure how to get around it until I saw this shot by Connie Arida. So it’s very retouched. I can live with that. Seeing this image brought me just the notion that I needed: that a good photo is as much about what is left out, as what is framed. Ever notice that good monster movies keep the suspense up by NOT revealing the monster right away? They hint, they tease, they imply, and as such the audience is captivated by wanting to know what the monster looks like. That’s a trick to engaging content. I realized that while my photos may be ok technically, that emotionally, I was much too explicit. I’ll be working on that for the next little while.

A wonderful shot by Connie Arida, pointing out that sometimes the best part of a photograph is what is not included.

2009-06-13 I was thinking of updating my profile pic. Full body shots are rarely useful for it, but I’d gotten the lighting just-so on this one, so I thought I’d share it. Call it a vanity pic. Unretouched, of course.

Added it to my flickr stream too:

This shot was taken in Midian City

Image of a Kitsune (Second Life Avatar)

Species:      Kitsune or Japanese Fox Spirit  狐
Subspecies: Nogitsune or Wild Kitsune.  “Keepers of the Void”

Kitsune are considered a type of bakemono or demon.  Specifically they are classed as Yōkai (妖怪 “phantom”, “spirit”, or “monster”).  They are considered messengers of the Shinto Kami or God Inari.  There are a not a hybrid of human and fox but more a distinct species with the ability to shape shift or appear human.  There are stories of Kitsune taking on a human appearence usually as a beautiful woman with almond eyes, and high cheekbones and a fox tail which they find difficulty in hiding.  Kitsune can act as guardians for human families or clans but if angered rarely forgive and for that reason historically many families refused any intermarriage into a fox protected family.  They have a weakness for inari and tofu and kitsune soup which is named for them.   Humans can become possessed by a fox spirit usually entering through the breasts or fingernails.  Kitsunetsuki (狐憑き or 狐付き; also written kitsune-tsuki) literally means the state of being possessed by a fox.  There is a hiearchy of Fox types associated with 13 shinto elements.  A  9 tailed fox is considered powerful but old.  The tails representing a life span of 9000 + years.  As a kitsune will only grow an additional tail for each 1000 years they have lived. The more tails a kitsune has—up to 9 tails—the older, wiser, and more powerful it is. When a kitsune gains its ninth tail, its fur becomes white or gold.  It becomes myobu or 九尾の狐 nine-tailed foxes.  They become omnipotent or sometimes omniscience.  The fox tail is what usually gives them away.  Especially when they are drunk or lazy.  When not in human form or possessing a human, a kitsune keeps the ball – hoshi no tama (star balls) – in its mouth or carries it on its tail.  A fox is usually frightend by dogs that they will sometimes revert to fox form to flee.  Foxes cry is called konkai or kon kon or gon gon.  The bark of the fox is called gekker.  Female foxes are vixen and not bitches (female dog).  Kitsune are friendly with the Tanuki who is another shapeshifter.  There is a hiearchy of Fox types associated with 13 Shinto elements:
Some of the classes of Kitsune are:
myobu –  Celestial
and all others are 野狐 nogitsune or wild literally “field foxes” :
nogitsune –  Darkness, Wild “Keeper of the void”
kuko – Air, create or appear in mist & fog
Kiko or koryo – ghost foxes
ninko – invisible fox spirit, that can only be seen by humans that have been possessed by one.
In classical Japanese, kitsu-ne means come and sleep, and ki-tsune means always comes. (Wikipedia)  It is important to note that Kitsune are part of Japanese folklore while the neko is part of anime and manga creation and do not have a historical conterpart other than the “Bakeneko” demon cat. But they are often confused for one another.
If you want to look for a kitsune they live at the end of rainbows and usually are out playing when it rains.  But don’t watch a fox wedding as this will bring out their angry side.

Abstractia are a wholly peculiar form of life, while they seem to be subject to the rules of physics, their functioning and ability to live is still considered by most of those who have pondered the notion, quite incomprehensible.

Mechas are (broadly) non-biological organisms where the functioning of the organs tend to be simpler, the outer skin is typically metalic based, and the fuel source for life is often non-biological, chemical or energy based.

Furries are organic biological creatures that are usually considered part-humanoid; they appear in the form of bipedal fusion of human and animal. They are usually considerered to be forms of “animals” in common parlance. This points to the bias toward granting more importance to the humanoid species, a bias that is both unjust and not understood by the author.

So called “Humanoid” species, are species that are loosely related to the species Homo Sapient. Biological creatures, mammals that walk upright on two extremities (usually referred to as legs and feet), have to manipulating extremeties, usually refered to as “arms and hands”, a torso and a head.

Second Life Encyclopedia of Avatar Species

Welcome to my new project: Second Life Encyclopedia of Avatar Species.

Launched on 2008-08-22, the purpose of The Second Life Encyclopedia of Avatar Species is to create and explore the Second Life Taxonomy of Avatars, to explore potential and plausible lines of evolution, and to deliniate just what makes a species who and what they are. We will also attempt to understand just how such mixes are possible, and what the trace the origins of the various species. We will, as a useful tool attempt to use Linnaean taxonomy to the best of our efforts

Example classification: humans

As an example, consider the Linnaean classification for modern humans:

  • Domain: Eukarya (organisms which have cells with a nucleus)
  • Kingdom: Animalia (with eukaryotic cells having cell membrane but lacking cell wall, multicellular, heterotrophic)
  • Phylum: Chordata (animals with a notochord, dorsal nerve cord, and pharyngeal gill slits, which may be vestigial)
  • Subphylum: Vertebrata (possessing a backbone, which may be cartilaginous, to protect the dorsal nerve cord)
  • Class: Mammalia (endothermic vertebrates with hair and mammary glands which, in females, secrete milk to nourish young)
  • Cohort: Placentalia (giving birth to live young after a full internal gestation period)
  • Order: Primates (collar bone, eyes face forward, grasping hands with fingers)
  • Suborder: Anthropoidea (the monkeys, apes, and hominids. As opposed to the lemurs, loris, and tarsier.)
  • Infraorder: Catarrhini (Monkeys, apes, and hominids from the eastern hemisphere)
  • Superfamily: Hominoidae (Humans and great apes.)
  • Family: Hominidae (upright posture, large brain, stereoscopic vision, flat face, hands and feet have different specializations)
  • Genus: Homo (s-curved spine, “man”)
  • Species: Homo sapiens (high forehead, well-developed chin, gracile bone structure)

Note: This is a work in progress! In simple english, it means “I’ll attend to it to the best of my abilities as time permits. It’s not complete, or specific.” :)

Please see the categories in the nav suite for an outline.

You are encouraged to participate and submit your new species by leaving a comment, and I will update it once per week, most likely over the weekend as time permits

SERIOUSLY Cheezed Off!

I’ve started a new project, I’m going to do an encyclopedia of the various species of avatars in Second Life, and on a coup-de-foudre, spent three hours taking pictures of all my friends and even going to so far as to asking help from the Midian City Nekos. I was flooded with acceptations, and all of these kind people took the time to come down to Kuula, and allow me to take their picture, and the wrote me notecards too.!

Example image of Quite's screwed up images

Example image of Quite's screwed up images

What happened? I had stupidly left show HUDs and UI checked, and also the images became corrupt! I am so incredibly cheezed off at not only losing 3 hours worth of photography, but also to have inconvenienced all the fine people from Midian, people whome I’ve never met to who have and offered me their time and energy.

Deep apologies to everyone! The project WILL go on, but it has a really rocky start. I’m not sure if it would be right for me to call some of you back. If it is, please IM me in world, or leave me a comment here and I’ll reach you again.

Thanks again, and sorry again :/

Brace Beats Bejeezus out of Beautiful, Bodacious and Benificient Quite Oh

Sunday, August 3, 2008,
Kuula, Second Life

Before shocked and terrified avatars, Brace Coral, founding member of New Citizens Incorpororated went on a rampage of widly transforming from shape to shape until in a blinding act of Avatar on Avatar violence beat Quite Oh senseless. “At first, we thought she was having a good time”, quivered Nikko Dezno, fluid running down his pipes, “but then Quite hit the ground as if lightnting struck! We were all in shock, and then we looked up only to see Brace wielding a bat over her, with a wide-eyed yet placid look on her face”.

Quite Oh, who was allegedly beaten sensless, over and over claims to not recall the event, saying that “…everything was sort of hazy and unrezzed. It was like I was hovering above my body. I thought I was dying”.

Quite Oh remained motionless for a full three minutes before realizing that she had not died or frozen. Witness to this brutal and baffling act, Miter Lorefield managed to capture the dangerous woman in the act. Miter was logged to having cried out “Proof!”.

The wild and cunning Brace Coral remains uncaptured to this day. Said a witness who was too chicken to give her name *cough*Disa*cough*: “I’m not turning her in! Brace is wild and crazy and sets fear into my heart. I tremble at the mere mention of her name! No way man!”.  Locke Cardway a less than sympathetic and well known shady character offered “Finally someone had the courage to do it. X-D”. Ms. Cardway is currently under investigation by the mean-people avatar squad.

A reward is offered: high quality cubes made of plywood from genuine Linden trees is offered for information leading to her arrest, or at the very least, serious tsk-tsk-tsking
